Batwoman Series Picked Up For A Full Season

May 8, 2019

The CW has ordered a full series of Batwoman, starring Ruby Rose, to air during the 2019-2020 season. The show will be the first live-action superhero series with an openly gay lead character.

This version of Batwoman is based on the DC comics character Kate Kane, who was introduced to the comic book series in 2006 as a Jewish lesbian “armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind.”

According to the CW, Kate “soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence.”

“But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”

Ruby Rose debuted as Batwoman on the CW Arrowverse crossover Elseworlds, which aired on the CW in December last year.

Kate Kane/Batwoman was introduced in the second episode of the three-night special and whilst Rose didn’t have a large role, her debut sent fans wild and caused the CW to order the pilot for the Batwoman show.

In Elseworlds, fans were introduced to Gotham three years after Batman disappeared, with the city suffering because of his absence.

Out producer Greg Berlanti’s company will produce the new series in association with Warner Bros. Television, with Caroline Dries executive producing and writing the show.

In December, Dries told EW a bit about the Elseworlds setup for the new Batwoman show.

“Our approach is: What does Gotham look like after the Batman has been gone for three years? So if you have the law and order, protector, and hope gone, what happens as a result?”

“Some people are thriving in his absence because now they can start to do their own thing without the oversight. A lot of other people are suffering and they’re losing hope, and the city itself and infrastructure is falling apart. So it’s not a happy place. Our guys walk into a grimy, scary Gotham.”

Joining the Batwoman cast is Dougray Scott (My Week With Marilyn, Snatch), who will play Kate Kane’s dad, Colonel Jacob Kane, the commander of Gotham’s private security firm The Crows. He’s “made it his mission to protect his city better than the Dark Knight ever could.”

Rachel Skarsten (Molly's Game, Reign) will play Alice, the leader of the Wonderland Gang; Meagan Tandy (Teen Wolf) plays military academy graduate Sophie Moore; Camrus Johnson (Marvel’s Luke Cage) is Lucius Fox’s son, Luke Fox/Batwing and Nicole Kang (YOU) takes the role of Kate’s step-sister Mary Hamilton.

A new 20-second Batwoman teaser has been released but it doesn’t give much away, except that Rose looks great playing the tough, silent type.

According to Dries: "Ruby has a really strong, silent presence. Her look is so powerful that you don’t want to take your eyes off of her..."

No air date for Batwoman has been announced yet, however the CW says it’s coming soon…
