Feelgood Broadway musical The Prom has been nominated for seven Tony Awards. The show is about Emma, a teenage girl from Indiana who was kicked out by her parents when she came out as gay and banned by her school from taking her girlfriend to the prom. Sensing a great PR opportunity, a group of self-involved Broadway actors come to town to help Emma fight for her rights.
The 73rd annual Tony Awards nominations were announced on Tuesday, April 30. The Prom was nominated for Best Musical, Best Direction Of A Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, Best Sound Design Of A Musical. Stars Caitlin Kinnunen and Beth Leavel were both nominated for Best Performance By An Actress In A Leading Role In A Musical and Brooks Ashmanskas was nominated for Best Performance By An Actor In A Leading Role In A Musical.
In April, out screenwriter, producer and director Ryan Murphy (Pose, Glee, American Horror Story announced that he will be turning the musical into a movie event for Netflix.
“The Prom is one of the most uplifting, heartfelt and special musicals I have ever seen on Broadway,” he wrote on Instagram.
“It’s truly an original that celebrates the underdog and says in a loving spectacular way that LGBTQ rights are human rights. I feel a special connection to it because it’s set in Indiana, and that’s where I grew up, too."

Also in April, Murphy announced that he is making groundbreaking Broadway play The Boys In The Band into a Netflix movie. The entire out and proud cast of the 2018 Broadway revival will reprise their roles in the movie, including Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells, Zachary Quinto, Charlie Carver and Robin de Jesus.
The play by Mart Crowley, which originally premiered on April 14, 1968, centres on a group of gay men who gather for a birthday party in New York City.
“Last summer, The Boys in the Band were on Broadway, breaking house records at The Booth. THIS summer, The Boys In the Band will be filming a Netflix movie event,” Murphy wrote on Instagram.
“The Broadway cast of BOYS was so important to me, and as equally ground breaking as Mart Crowley’s seminal work." “Everyone in the cast was out and proud…and feeling so blessed to mark the 50th anniversary of Mart’s landmark play. The entire Broadway cast will reprise their roles in the film.”
Last year Murphy left 20th Century Fox TV for a five year deal with Netflix which will reportedly earn him as much as $300 million, the largest ever TV producer contract in history.
“Ryan Murphy’s series have influenced the global cultural zeitgeist, reinvented genres and changed the course of television history. His unfaltering dedication to excellence and to give voice to the underrepresented, to showcase a unique perspective or just to shock the hell out of us, permeates his genre-shattering work,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, when he announced the deal.
Both The Prom and The Boys In The Band debut on Netflix in 2020, The Tony Awards will be handed out on June 9.
