American folk-rock singer Brandi Carlile has released the music video for her single Party Of One and it’s a lesbian tear jerker starring Elisabeth Moss from The Handmaid’s Tale.
Carlile and her wife married in 2012 and have two children. It's their life together that inspired the lyrics to the song, which is off her 2018 album By The Way, I Forgive You.
“I was drunk. I was listening to (Joni Mitchell’s) Blue in the hayloft of my barn, and I was feeling an insane amount of pressure to make my domestic life work, more pressure than a straight person,” Carlile told Rolling Stone.
“We’ve been witnessing an entire generation being granted access to a civil right and all of the pressure and all of the joy that comes with that.”
Moss produced the stunning music video about a lesbian couple finding their way through an epic fight, worked as creative director and hired an all-female crew. She became involved in the project after meeting Carlile when they both appeared on an episode of Ellen.
"When she sent me this song and asked me to be involved in the creation of the video shortly afterwards, I said yes immediately after I listened to the track because I fell so head over heels in love with it. It’s one of the most beautiful musical pieces I’ve ever heard, right down to the string arrangement at the end,” Moss said in a statement.
The concept for the video came from director Bérénice Eveno.
“I wanted to capture a love so deep that it permeates everything around you, every object and every inch of space,” Eveno said in a statement. “A love that haunts you and never lets go.”
Carlile told Rolling Stone that the all day shoot was an intense experience for Moss, actress Nicole Disson and the crew, especially the fight scene.
“It was so uncomfortable that four out of five people in the room burst into tears,” she says. “They really properly fought, it was so intense. I chewed off my fingernails. That scene took 10 years off my life.”
