Kristen Stewart and Chloë Sevigny have spoken to Entertainment Tonight about their new movie Lizzie, in which Sevigny plays notorious axe murderer Lizzie Borden and Stewart plays housemaid Bridget Sullivan, who Borden falls for.

Stewart says she was drawn to the movie because it portrays a repressed woman struggling in a male-dominated society.

“To be honest, I like to think that you could draw a picture of a woman who kind of looks like carbonated water that’s been shoved into a bottle and shaken up and shaken up and shaken up and shaken up and the whole time you’re thinking ‘god that’s a lot like the frustrations that I have as a woman, that exists still.’”

“And then, by the end, something so heinous is the result that theoretically it’s something that is…really topical, but then you go ‘god I feel crazy, I just empathized with a murderer.'”

Stewart said she loved the way the imagined relationship between the two women was written.

“...it was really detailed and nuanced and the way that these women got to know each other at a time when they weren’t allowed to and the way that they bolstered each other emotionally was really real to me.”

Stewart jumped at the chance to work with Sevigny, who produced the movie. "I literally saw this and was game immediately. I would have done anything to do it."

According to Sevigny, it’s historically accurate to portray Borden in a lesbian relationship.

“I think everybody loves a tragic love story and there are many accounts of Lizzie having affairs with other women, notably Nance O’Neill, who was an actress at the time,” she told Entertainment Tonight.

Sevigny said that after staying at the Borden house, which is now a bed and breakfast, “It’s hard to imagine that they weren’t in cahoots, that somehow they hadn’t planned this whole thing together.”

During the interview, Stewart also spoke about her role in the upcoming Charlie’s Angels movie, which will be directed by Elizabeth Banks and costars English actresses Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska.

"It is true I think, it is not maybe everyone's immediate response that it would be something we would have to see again because the one I grew up with was so much fun," she said of the 2000 and 2003 Charlie's Angels movies starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu.

"The re-imagining is so grounded and well intentioned and really shows the way women can work together now. It tries to be warm and funny but it lacks a kitch element that we have seen before that works so well."

Banks will take the role of Bosley, the girls' boss, and the detective agency will become a security and intelligence firm, with Stewart undertaking boxing training in preparation for the role.

Lucy Liu told Entertainment Tonight she supports the reboot as "It will only be a more positive result for women.”
