Whilst many members of the LGBT community are celebrating the news that Ruby Rose will play the lead role of an openly lesbian Batwoman on a new CW TV show, other queer people have taken to Twitter to voice their disapproval over the choice to cast Rose in the ground breaking role.

On Wednesday, Rose appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to discuss her elation at playing Batwoman. The episode was filmed the week before it aired.

“I kept like spontaneously crying and I feel like I’m probably going to do it now,” a clearly emotional Rose told Fallon.

“I’m so thrilled… And I feel like the reason I kept getting so emotional is because growing up watching TV, I never saw someone on TV I could identify with, let alone a superhero,” she said.

Rose explained that she has two mottos in life, the first taken from Oscar Wilde. “’Be yourself because everyone else is taken,’ so I always lived by that motto, and the second motto when I came into the industry was  'Be the person that you needed when you were younger’ and I feel like sort of one motto led me to the other and I kept crying about it.”

Rose told Fallon that she keeps thinking that “not only can kids watch this growing up and relate to it and feel empowered and think that they can be a superhero, but also I can go and do these things like visiting hospitals and kids and people in need and it’s a really, it’s an amazing opportunity.”

On Thursday, Rose responded to the strong Twitter backlash from members of the LGBT community who, for various reasons, don't want her in the Batwoman role.

"I wish we would all support each other and our journeys," she wrote.

“When women and when minorities join forces we are unstoppable..when we tear each other down it’s much more hurtful than from any group. But hey 🦇 I love a challenge x."

The star later tweeted, “Sending everyone my love and gratitude, it’s been a rollercoaster of a year, this month especially.”

“I am looking forward to getting more than 4 hours of sleep and to break from Twitter to focus all my energy on my next 2 projects.”

“If you need me, I’ll be on my Bat Phone. 👋🏻🦇”

And then she deactivated her account.
