Ruby Rose has been cast as lesbian Batwoman for a new TV series on the CW network. The character will be introduced in a cross over event in December for TV shows Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends Of Tomorrow.

Out producer and director Greg Berlanti is developing the series for the CW which will hopefully air next year and was determined to hire a lesbian actress to play the character. The series will be the first live-action superhero series with an openly gay lead character.

This version of Batwoman is based on the DC comics character Kate Kane, who was introduced to the comic series in 2006 as a Jewish lesbian “armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind.”

According to the CW, in the new series, Kate “soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence.”

“But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”

Rose announced her casting on Instagram, writing: “The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honoured. I’m also an emotional wreck because this is a childhood dream."

“This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on TV and felt alone and different."

“Thank you everyone. Thank you god.”
