In a cover feature for Net-A-Porter published on Friday, Westworld and Thor: Ragnarok actress Tessa Thompson came out, speaking for the first time about her sexuality and rumoured relationship with singer Janelle Monáe.
Sounding like she's been out with her loved ones for a while, Thompson, 34, confirmed that she is “attracted to men and also to women,” and explained that her family easily accepts her sexuality.
“I can take things for granted because of my family – it’s so free and you can be anything that you want to be….If I bring a woman home, (or) a man, we don’t even have to have the discussion.”
Speculation about the status of Thompson’s relationship with Monáe increased after Thompson starred in the music video for the single Pynk, off Monáe’s latest album Dirty Computer, where she bursts out from between Monáe's vagina-pants wearing legs.
Thompson also stars as Monáe’s love interest in the must-watch emotion picture that accompanies the album.

“Isn’t it such a good record? I am so proud to have been involved,” she said in the Net-A-Porter interview.
“I get text messages from friends that are like, ‘Would you please let Janelle know I came out to my family because of her?’” she said proudly. “I think that work is really helping people and probably saving some lives.”
Thompson declined to confirm whether she’s in a relationship with Monáe, saying “It’s tricky, because Janelle and I are just really private people and we’re both trying to navigate how you reconcile wanting to have that privacy and space, and also wanting to use your platform and influence."
Understanding the importance of doing her part for LGBT visibility, she sounded conflicted about how much of her personal life she should be expected to reveal publicly.
“That was something I was conscientious of in terms of this declaration around Janelle and myself. I want everyone else to have that freedom and support that I have from my loved ones, but so many people don’t. So, do I have a responsibility to talk about that? Do I have a responsibility to say in a public space that this is my person?”
And then Thompson explained their relationship like this:
“We love each other deeply. We’re so close, we vibrate on the same frequency. If people want to speculate about what we are, that’s okay. It doesn’t bother me.”
Yep, sounds like they’re a couple to me.
