Thursday May 17 is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia, (IDAHOBIT). So what is it, why is it important and how can you get involved?
Established in 2004 to give visibility to the violence and discrimination experienced by the LGBTIQ community worldwide, IDAHOBIT is an international day of action held on May 17 every year.
This date was chosen as it's the anniversary of the day in 1990 when the World Health Organisation removed the classification of homosexuality as a mental disorder.
Also known as IDAHOT or IDAHOTB, IDAHOBIT is the largest LGBTIQ solidarity event in the world, with over 1,000 events taking place in more than 130 countries, including 37 countries where same-sex acts are illegal.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Here are some Australian statistics for you:
75% Of LGBTIQ youth experience some form of discrimination, most of it at school.
