Iconic Aussie TV show Neighbours will air Australia's first legal gay wedding next month, with characters Aaron Brennan (Matt Wilson) and David Tanaka (Takaya Honda) set to tie the knot. And Australia's favourite lesbian, Magda Szubanski, will play the marriage celebrant for the history-making event.
“I really think popular culture shows like this can change consciousness,” Szubanski said of the wedding storyline.
“They can change people’s attitudes so this reflects some of the changes already happened and will hopefully normalise further that we’re people just like everybody else.”
Both Wilson and Honda say they pressured the show’s writers for over a year to let their characters wed and the popular TV couple adorably proposed to each other in May.

“There have been so many parts of David’s story that have given me a great sense of pride and which have been an absolute honour to portray; from discovering Paul was his dad, to his coming out to now marrying the man of his dreams in what will be the first legal gay wedding on a drama,” said Honda
“We are both ecstatic to be part of this huge moment and it stands alone as the highlight of my career,’ said Wilson.
“This storyline means a lot to me, my friends and to all the fans who love Aaron and David.”
