Trans activist Nicole Maines is joining the cast of the CW TV show Supergirl as a trans superhero. Her character will be the first trans superhero on television.

20 year old Maines says she knew she was trans at the age of 3. When her primary school banned her from using the female toilets, Maines and her family sued. The school district was found to have breached the Human Rights Act and Maines and her family were awarded $75,000.

The family’s journey towards accepting Maine as transgender was the subject of the 2015 book Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family, written by Amy Ellis Nutt. The same year Maines played a transgender teen on TV show Royal Pains.

In 2016, Maines shared her personal story about being transgender on the HBO documentary The Trans List.

Maines will be a series regular on season 4 of Supergirl. She plays Nia Nal/Dream Girl, a superhero who is a “soulful woman with a fierce drive to protect others.” Nia is also a reporter.

Maines spoke to Variety’s Executive Editor For TV, Debra Birnbaum, at Comic-Con on Saturday, saying “It feels fitting to say with great power, comes great responsibility. I’m nervous because I want to do it right.”

“We can be whoever we want, we can do whatever we want, we can be superheroes, because in many ways we are.”

“We’ve had trans representation in television for a while but it hasn’t been the right representation.”

“I think we’re in a time right now where more than ever representation in the media matters. And what we see on television has a very dramatic effect on our society.”
