Former Sex And The City star and candidate for Governor of New York, Cynthia Nixon, used the annual New York Trans Day Of Action last Friday to reveal that her son is transgender.
Nixon posted a photo on Instagram showing 21 year old Samuel graduating from the University Of Chicago.
“I’m so proud of my son Samuel Joseph Mozes (called Seph) who graduated college this month,” she captioned the photo. “I salute him and everyone else marking today’s #TransDayOfAction.”
Nixon has two children with her ex-partner Danny Mozes, Samuel who was born Samantha Mozes Nixon and 15 year old son Charles Ezekiel Mozes . She has one child with wife Christine Marinoni, 7 year old Max Ellington Nixon-Marinoni.
This is the first time the LGBT rights campaigner has mentioned her son’s gender identity, although she and Marinoni are vocal supporters of transgender rights and Nixon has previously spoken about the importance of LGBT people coming out.
At a rally protesting Trump's immigration ban in February last year, Nixon told the crowd “As LGBT people we know how important coming out is, but I would argue that our coming out has never been more important than it is right now.”
“We need to come out not just as queer, but as people who know all too well what it feels like to be put in a box that says other, less than, easy target if you’re looking for someone to bully, harass, discriminate against, demonize, beat up or even kill.”
Nixon is currently calling for the abolishment of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency which has been enforcing Trump’s policy of separating children from their illegal immigrant parents at the US border.
“ICE has strayed so far away from its mission. It is supposed to be here to keep Americans safe but what it has turned into, frankly, is a terrorist organization of its own that is terrorizing people who are coming to this country,” she said at a New York Church on Thursday, where she referred to Donald Trump as ICE’s “egomaniacal leader."
