Ruby Rose has announced on Twitter that after two years together, she and Jessica Origliasso broke up a few months ago.
Fans speculated that the tweet was an April Fools Joke, but Rose responded by tweeting “I understand it’s “April 1st” but I would never use something so personal as an April fools joke.”
The couple first dated in 2008, stayed friends and then reconnected in 2016, with Rose starring in and directing The Veronica’s music video for On Your Side.
“It’s me. Me and Ruby Rose. And it is our love story in this video,” Jess told Smalzey from radio station Nova 100 in 2016.
“We’ve been friends for eight years. We just reconnected over doing this video. We sort of just fell in love. It’s pretty cute, honestly.” “We support each other in our careers and we support one another and be there. It made sense to be able to come out on that level because we want to be there in each other’s lives on a public level.”
“It’s just this crazy thing when you care about someone for so long and then you have the chance to reconnect,” she said.
Last November things got publicly rocky, with Rose Twitter feuding with Origliasso’s twin sister and band mate, Lisa, after the Yes vote won the Australian Same-Sex Marriage Postal survey.
“So glad to see Lisa Origliasso screaming in excitement about the yes vote after telling us she thinks we should feel ‘lucky’ we don’t get stoned to death like they do in other countries and to get over it a few months ago. Really warms my heart,” Ruby wrote, adding a rolling eyes emoji. She quickly deleted the tweet.
Jess then released a statement on Instagram which seemed to confirm her sister's homophobia.
"With the current conversation that was happening in the lead up and outcome of the marriage equality results this week, I feel it is necessary to share some feelings."
"I may not have struggled with an inner turmoil, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t struggled with people close to me, degrading my sexuality because of their own personal judgments or ignorance."
“People can publicly support the LGBT community, but behind closed doors inflict deep pain because of their own inability to accept or understand you as a part of that community."
“That can be a particularly difficult and heartbreaking experience. But one that has been a private and real struggle in my life.”
"For anyone struggling in silence, please know that you are not alone. And no matter what, you are free to be whoever you choose to be without question, or have your sexual preference reduced to fit anyone's expectations, or their 'reality' of you."
"We all do our best, and we learn to open our minds and our hearts. To do better and be better. I wish that for everyone. I would never wish to hurt anyone who has needed education and self reflection in this area, but I cannot defend the behaviour, or minimise the pain I have felt over 12 years."
"Wishing only love to be our path to understanding moving forward."
Lisa was forced to defend herself, releasing a separate statement saying “This past week I have been accused of making intolerant statements and having intolerant views.”
“I did not make those statements and I do not hold those views. Sexuality has never played a factor in my acceptance of people or their relationships,” she said.
“I have and always will continue to show my unwavering support for the LGBTI community with pride and continue to celebrate love, acceptance and tolerance within our country and community.”
The sisters then announced that the release of their latest album, which was due at the end of 2017, was being delayed. “Due to personal circumstances out of our control, we have made the decision to hold releases till 2018”.
Rose later attempted to explain her Twitter outburst to KIIS FMs Kyle and Jackie O, saying that the comments at a very stressful time.
“Umm … yeah … I don’t know. Everyone wants what’s best for everybody. I want them to be happy — I’m obviously the biggest fan of the band, ever. Number one fan. That was just a very emotional day,” she said.
“In that emotional time — we’d just arrived in China, with jet lag and all - I could’ve handled myself differently, and I was definitely frustrated at the situation. Everyone’s good now and working through it, and I think that’s what’s important. Family’s tough.”
Rose also told Kyle and Jackie O that her and Jess about the difficulty of having a long-distance relationship and that therapy helped the pair cope.
“Every relationship has its ups and downs … we’re long distance for the most part, and we make it work so well,” she said.
“I swear by it for every relationship: Therapy. It’s the greatest thing for a relationship, ever. We’re at a point now where we properly know how to communicate at a long distance, which has been the hardest thing.”
Despite making public appearances together since, things looked to be over for the pair in early December, when Rose deleted all photos of the pair off her Instagram and Origliasso unfollowed Rose on Twitter and Instagram.
