They've been engaged for nine long years, and on Sunday 11th March, Liberal MP Tim Wilson finally married the love of his life, Ryan Bolger.

On December 4, 2017, during his speech in the marriage equality debate, Wilson proposed for a second time to his fiancé of nine years, school teacher Ryan Bolger. It was a first for Australian parliament and a moment that made the news around the world. "In my first speech I defined our bond by the ring that sits on both of our left hands," he said. "They are the answer to the question we cannot ask.”

"So there's only one thing left to do; Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me?"

Ryan was seated in the gallery and broke into a huge smile before answering ‘yes'.

Wilson fought his emotions as he explained the reactions of friends and loved ones when he told them he was engaged nine years ago. "Many simply did not know how to react, many SMSs went unresponded, in conversation, some people politely changed the topic or fell silent entirely."

"For a while, Ryan kept pushing for an engagement party but the truth was I kept delaying it, perhaps wrongly, because the strong message I took from so many people's silence was no-one would come."

Wilson announced the wedding on Twitter and the Twitterverse reacted with messages of congratulations for the marriage equality advocate.

"The 11th of March is a special day. It's the day after @rpbolger's birthday. The day before mine. And now and forever it is our wedding anniversary. #BolgerWilson2018," he wrote.

During his 2016 maiden speech to the House of Representatives as the new member for Melbourne seat of Goldstein, Wilson thanked Bolger for his support over the years and opened up about his tormented adolescence.

"The story of finding myself dominated my teenage years," he said.

"For six of them, I let fear decide and determine who I could be. It wasn't until I was 18 that I chose to confront that fear.”

"It was a fear that took an energetic 12-year-old and hollowed his confidence to eventually doubt his legitimate place in the world.”

"Yet it was in those depths that I found my deeper, inner strength. And as tormenting as that experience was, it is what has made me strong."

"I carry the confidence of knowing I have already conquered my worst bully. That is why I do not fear standing up, even when it is deeply unpopular. I am here to fight for the type of country we want to be."

"Most importantly, to my fiance, Ryan: I know you have sacrificed so much for me to be here today, and we are only at the end of our beginning," Wilson said.

"For seven years a ring has sat on both of our left hands. And they are the answer to a question we still cannot ask.”

"No matter what happens, we have already achieved more than many who come and go from this place, because we have lived the change we seek in the world."
