Portia Makes Ellen Cry With Incredible Birthday Gift

For Christmas I bought my wife a pair of shoes – Ugg Boots actually, and she seemed pretty happy with them. Until we watched the video of Portia de Rossi giving her wife, Ellen DeGeneres, her 60th birthday present on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Portia and Ellen have long been #CoupleGoals for us. They’ve been together for 15 years. They’re both bravely out. They’re committed vegans and animal activists, have incredible taste in houses and are excellent at interior design. Plus, they seem to smile a lot.

But now Portia gave Ellen a gorilla sanctuary in Rwanda as a birthday present and my wife is refusing to wear her Ugg Boots. And she’s resumed talks about becoming vegan. Or vegetarian. Or maybe pescatarian plus chicken…

It all started last Thursday, when a croaky-voiced Portia popped into Ellen's birthday celebration show to announce the stunning gift.

"It's your 60th birthday. This gift had to be really special, and it had to represent who you are and what you really care about - not just now - but what you've always cared about."

"So, I combined that and questions when we first met like who's your idol? And what would you do if you weren't a talk show host?"

"Literally guys, for like the last two years, Ellen has said to me ‘I feel like I'm not doing enough.’ Every day, almost.”

"So, I put all that together and I got you this gift. So, let's see it – happy birthday!"

Portia played a video which explained that Ellen’s hero was conservationist Dian Fossey, and showed the preservation work that Dian did with mountain gorilla’s in Rwanda.

"So, for your birthday, Ellen, I am bringing you and your hero, Dian, together by building The Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund," Portia announced.

Which made Ellen cry.

"Ellen, you will carry on Dian's legacy by giving them a permanent home in Rwanda. Now, you will join Dian as a protector and champion of these amazing animals, the mountain gorillas. Happy birthday!"

The donation to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund will create a centre for tourism, education and scientific research in Rwanda, as the first project for the foundation that De Rossi set up, The Ellen De Generes Wildlife Fund.

The segment finished with Ellen paying a sweet tribute to her wife. “When we got married Portia’s line was ‘it’s good to be loved, it’s profound to be understood’ and she understands me, because that is the best gift that anyone could’ve given me. Love you."
