Heartbreaking news for lesbian couple and art duo, Fleur Pierets and Julian P Bloom, known professionally as JF. Pierets. Their marriage equality project ‘22’ has been forced to finish as Julian has been diagnosed with brain cancer and given three months to live.
For ‘22', the couple were symbolically marrying 24 times, once in each of the countries that has achieved marriage equality. The aim was to celebrate the places that have legalised same-sex marriage and highlight the work that needs to be done in the 170 countries that don’t. They legally wed in the United States and symbolically married in The Netherlands, Belgium and France. Julian fought breast cancer in 2016, felt ill after their Paris wedding last November and was told she has numerous tumors in her brain and around her heart. She has now lost her ability to read and is losing her memory and ability to speak.
Fleur posted the devastating news on her Facebook page.
According to Fleur, “Julian always said that if we could only inform one person of the fact that we can get married in so few countries, for her, 22 - The Project would be a success.” So, when Fleur told Julian that they had received an invitation to appear on the Ellen DeGeneres Show in February, Julian replied “We did this. Just the two of us. And don't you ever forget that."
The couple won’t be able to appear on Ellen, and Fleur recently received the news that their insurance will only cover the hospital costs and not Julian's palliative care.
Their friends have set up a Go Fund Me page to help cover Julian's medical expenses.
