One Of Australia's Only Mainstream Lesbian Characters Is Back In New 'Offspring' Season

June 25, 2017

Network Ten’s hit family dramedy ‘Offspring’ is back for a seventh season and that means one of Australia’s only mainstream lesbian characters, Nurse Kim, returns to our screens.

If you’re an Offspring fan then you already know and love obstetrician Nina, her crazy family and the hilariously nutty characters who work with her at St Francis Hospital in Melbourne.

Episode one picks up a few weeks on from the end of last season, with Nina way over her head as Acting Head Of Obstetrics and Director Of Nursing, Kim Ackerholt, dishing out dirty jokes and sage advice as her friend struggles to make reality match the fantasy in her head.

Victorian College Of The Arts and Monash Uni graduate Alicia Gardiner loves playing the lesbian character she helped develop from a bit part into one of the show’s most popular characters.

"There was a point where I questioned where they were going with Kim and I had my fingers crossed that they weren't actually going to make her straight," she told the The West Australian.

"I love the fact she's a gay character on mainstream television and I didn't want it to go into the grey area of 'is she gay or is she straight' and they never did and that's brilliant."

Kim has a daughter Stella with her ex Renee, and this season Kim and her current partner Jess are looking for a sperm donor so they can start a family together. Nina’s younger brother Jimmy has already said no so in episode one Kim broadens the search a little further.

Network Ten are promising that this season will be the most surprising one ever and in terms of LGBTQ representation and shock value they really deliver in this episode. If there’s only one scene you watch this Wednesday night, it should be Nina's mum's announcement at her ‘Geraldine Day’ dinner. If this is any indication of how the rest of the season will play out, it’s going to be a ripper.

Offspring premieres on Wednesday 28th June at 8.40pm on Network Ten. You can catch up with previous episodes at tenplay.com.au.
