Dancing With Her Is The World’s First Lesbian Bridal Magazine

If the polls are accurate, Australia will be celebrating a Yes vote in the marriage equality postal survey this month. That makes it the perfect time to pore over other queer couples’ wedding photos in search of inspiration for your own big day.

That’s exactly what Australian couple Tara Baker and Arlia Hassel, founders of Dancing With Her, tried to do after Tara proposed last year. “The very next day we went to a three-story magazine shop to seek inspiration. We found nothing that we could relate to. It was really disappointing."

The couple came up with the idea of filling the void themselves and “bringing together a community. If we were looking for inspiration that was representative of our relationship, we knew there must be others who were seeking the same.” So they set up an Instagram account and filled it with beautiful wedding photos contributed by loved-up couples eager to share their stories and inspire others.

The Dancing With Her website followed in December last year, featuring lesbian love stories and weddings, a blog journal and a directory of trusted vendors across Australia and the U.S.A.

In February a 20 page digital magazine was released and this month sees the launch of the international quarterly Dancing With Her print magazine.

"Dancing With Her isn’t just another wedding magazine,” Tara told the Huffington Post. “Sure, it is stories of love and celebration, but it’s diverse and it’s something that LGBTQ+ women can relate to. It breaks the heteronormative stereotypes that are so prevalent in media across the world.”

The launch issue promises over 100 pages of lesbian love and wedding inspiration and features six Australian and two international real-life weddings. The team from My Proposal Co share their tips for planning a customised, high-end proposal, while green stylists Pop Up Gardens talk ethical alternatives to single use flowers. There’s expert advice on the legal stuff, gorgeous sweet treats from Vicki Meintjes Sweetmaker and romantic poetry from LGBT author Courtney Peppernell.

Tara says it’s purely coincidental that the Dancing With Her print launch coincides with the results of the marriage equality postal survey and, win or lose, the girls are moving ahead with their own wedding plans. “We plan to hold a small ceremony with 20 guests in August next year, regardless of the legal status of Marriage Equality in Australia, although we've got our fingers crossed it will be rightfully legally recognised.” The launch edition of the Dancing With Her magazine costs $19, including delivery within Australia and New Zealand, and heads to mailboxes from Monday 6th November. Copies are limited so order yours on the Dancing With Her website ASAP. Follow Dancing With Her on Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest.
