AFLW Stars Moana Hope & Erin Phillips Shine Bright For Equality On The Brownlow Red Carpet

On Monday night, Australian Football League Women's stars Moana Hope and Erin Phillips showed that work functions can be both fun and an opportunity to give much needed positive publicity to the Yes campaign for marriage equality.

Adelaide Crows co-captain Erin Phillips walked the red carpet at the Brownlow Medal with her wife Tracy Gahan while Collingwood's Moana Hope blew up twitter by bringing her girlfriend, model Isabella Carlstrom.

Last week the AFL, who are long-term supporters of marriage equality, made a public gesture of support for the Yes campaign by changing the logo at AFL house in Melbourne to a Yes sign. "We are a leader whether people like that or not. This is an issue that means a lot to many of our players, many of my employees and a lot of people in our community," AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan told AFL 360. "People should get out and vote and have their view but this is something that actually talks to a core value of ours, which is actual equality, that people, based on race, gender, sexuality, shouldn't be discriminated against," he said.

In May this year, AFL players signed a petition supporting the equality campaign and calling on football fans to join them in supporting marriage equality. AFL Players Association Chief Paul Marsh said of the petition, "The players stand for an inclusive community that doesn't discriminate on any level, whether it be because of sexuality, race, gender or religion." "We're proud that so many players have put their name to this petition in the hope that their voices help build momentum for marriage equality." "Marriage is about love and commitment, and it should be available to every Australian. It's a basic human right — everyone has a right to be treated equally. Quite frankly, I'm embarrassed to live in a country where people are discriminated against for who they love."
