Trump's 100 Days Of Hate Towards The LGBTIQ Community

Trump's first 100 days have seen unprecedented attacks on the LGBTI community.

Donald Trump's first 99 days in office were punctuated by record-breaking protests, so it’s fitting that his 100th day was no different. Thousands of people joined marches across America on Saturday, protesting Trump’s roll back of Obama-era climate change policies and demanding immediate climate action.

Reflecting on his own performance so far, Trump ignored his record lowest approval ratings for any president at this point in his term since polling began. "The first 100 days of my administration has been just about the most successful in our country's history,” he said last week. Unless you're the environment, an immigrant, a refugee, a woman, a minority or a member of the LGBTQ community.

“Since the moment he walked into the White House, Donald Trump has attacked the progress we have made toward full equality for the LGBTQ community and undermined the rights of countless Americans,” said LGBTQ advocacy group, the Human Rights Campaign President, Chad Griffin.

The HRC has created a timeline to chronicle the Trump Administration’s unprecedented attacks against the LGBTQ community and the ways in which the community is fighting back. The HRC lists some of Trump’s most disgraceful actions targeting the LGBTQ community:

  • Rolling back Obama’s school protections for transgender students;

  • Appointing and nominating anti-LGBTQ extremists to all levels of government, including the Attorney General, Jeff Sessions.

  • Nominating anti-LGBTQ judge, Neil Gorsuch, to a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court of the United States;

  • Erasing LGBTQ data collection from the census and federal surveys;

  • Deleting all mentions of LGBTQ issues from the White House website only hours into his administration;

  • Signing an executive order to repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) which provides access to healthcare for millions of LGBTQ people;

  • Creating a secret plan to use religion to discriminate against LGBTQ Americans

  • His executive order blocking all Syrian refugees and prohibiting nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S

According to Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of LGBTQ advocacy group, GLAAD, "100 days of Trump translates into 100 days of erasure for the LGBTQ community. From the census exclusion, to rescinding Obama's guidance for trans youth in schools, and lack of any LGBTQ mentions on the White House website, he has spent the early days of his administration trying to remove us from the very fabric of this country, and we must resist.” Dick Simpson, a political science professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago, told the Chicago Tribune that the mass demonstrations and grassroots momentum to resist Trump is nothing compared to the reaction that will erupt if Trump’s budget passes later in the year. The budget includes proposed massive cuts to social programs, tax cuts which will mainly benefit the wealthy, funding for the Mexican border wall and billions of dollars added to the defense budget. "What will begin to happen is the groups that are nonpolitical….and the not-for-profits — will begin to join the political groups in a variety of different methods, leading eventually to elections," Simpson said. "Right now there are protests and maybe they're blocking the street, being in front of Trump Tower, those will continue and swell just like they did with the women's march. But they're going to be minor in comparison to the total effort of rolling back the Trump policies." Sarah Kate Ellis congratulated Trump for inspiring people to make America great again. “Whether he meant to or not, Donald Trump has awakened a sleeping giant. Never before have Americans been more eager to participate, to advocate and to fight back. And each and every day, HRC and our grassroots supporters are harnessing the full power of our democracy to protect our progress and resist.”
