Award winning actresses Kate Winslet, 43 and Saoirse Ronan, 24, will play lovers in Ammonite, a film about English fossil collector and palaeontologist Mary Anning.
Deadline reports that the film is set in the 1840s in a UK coastal town - most likely Lyme Regis - where Anning resided. In the movie, an unlikely and life-changing romance develops between Anning and a wealthy young London woman who comes to town to convalesce.
Production begins in March, with Francis Lee, the writer/director of gay love story From God’s Own Country, directing.
In 2010, the Royal Society celebrated Anning as one of the ten British women who have had the most influence on science. Born into poverty, she overcame a limited education to become the greatest fossil finder of her time.
As a woman, she was not allowed to join the Geological Society Of London and was often not given credit for the specimens she found. Despite these limitations, she became famous around the world and her advice guided the work of many of the most respected geologists and palaeontologists of her era.
She never married or had any children and died of breast cancer at the age of 47.
