Variety is reporting that Kristen Stewart is in talks to star in big budget lesbian rom com Happiest Season, which was written by out actor/writer/producer Clea DuVall and writing partner Mary Holland and will be directed by DuVall.

Stewart will play a young woman whose plan to propose to her girlfriend at the family Christmas party goes haywire after discovering her girlfriend isn’t out to her conservative parents yet.

“Happiest Season is a refreshingly modern comedy about the complexity of navigating romantic relationships and family dynamics,” TriStar Pictures president Hannah Minghella told Variety earlier this year, after acquiring the world wide rights to the script.

“Clea and Mary have written a hilarious and heart-warming movie full of emotional truth that is sure to become a holiday classic."

“In Happiest Season, Clea and Mary have come up with a brilliant twist on the Christmas comedy that is laugh-out-loud funny and deeply moving,” said producer Marty Bowen.

“It manages to be both timely and timeless in the best of ways and we think it’s a holiday classic in the making.”

The film will be the first big studio comedy to feature a lesbian couple and follows on from the box office success of Love, Simon, which has a gay romantic lead.

There are a handful of big budget sapphic-themed films out at the moment. 28 year old Stewart stars opposite Chloë Sevigny in Lizzie, the story of alleged axe murderer Lizzie Borden. In it Kristen plays the housemaid Lizzie falls for.

In cinemas now is Colette, staring Keira Knightley as the French novelist turned cultural phenomenon Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, who defied gender roles and societal expectations and enjoyed several relationships with women.

Also showing is The Favourite, a bawdy romp is set in the court of Queen Anne during the 1700s. Olivia Colman portrays the Queen, Rachel Weisz is her friend and secret lover, Lady Sarah Churchill and Emma Stone is Sarah’s cousin, Abigail, who also sleeps with the Queen.

The stars were more than happy to discuss the sapphic storyline at the film's press conference at the Venice Film Festival. Asked about the movie's sexual politics, Colman said “Well there was lots of it (sex) and that’s good and that was timeless I suppose. That will always happen. It’s as though we think we invented sex but we didn’t. It’s been going on for quite a long time and it was awfully fun having sex with Emma Stone.”

“It was really fun having sex with you too,” Stone responded.
