It’s time to say goodbye to Alex, Piper and the women from Litchfield Penitentiary, with season seven of Orange Is The New Black set to be the last.
OITNB made TV history when it debuted in 2013, with a same-sex relationship at the core of the show and a diverse cast highlighting the plight of minority women both inside and outside of the American penitentiary system.
The show became one of Netflix’s most watched original series and was nominated for 16 Emmys, winning four, with actress Laverne Cox become the first transgender person to be nominated.
Season six ended with Piper hastily marrying Alex before being granted early release from prison. With Alex facing another four years inside, season seven is set to follow Piper’s adjustment to life on the outside and the fresh challenges these changes bring to the relationship.
"I think that’s the love of her life," Taylor Schilling, who plays Piper, told The Hollywood Reporter.
"I’m not quite sure what that means all the time, but I think there comes a point in life to either commit to partnership or to not. Either one is totally valid, but it seems to me that Piper decided to commit to a life lived in tandem with Alex and to just work through the stuff with another human.”
The cast of the show created a farewell video for fans, with Uzo Aduba promising that “Season seven you will not be disappointed. It is a season you will not forget. And we are going to give you everything and more than you could have ever wanted.”
Seasons 1 – 6 are now available on Netflix. Season 7 will debut mid-2019.
