Melbourne's St Kilda suburb has a new Rainbow Road, which was launched in fabulous style on Sunday. The Rainbow Road runs along Jackson Street, down to Fitzroy Street, next to the site of the planned Victorian Pride Centre at 79-81 Fitzroy Street in St Kilda.

Port Phillip Council Mayor Bernadene Voss opened the road, saying “This fantastic symbol of diversity and inclusion will be in pride of place for the annual Midsumma Pride March along Fitzroy Street for the next two years.”

Originally intended to be installed during the marriage equality debate, the Mayor said that “While logistics prevented us from doing this on State Government assets during this campaign, we are excited that everyone can now come and enjoy this colourful representation of the diversity for which St Kilda is famous.”

“Hopefully we can do another rainbow-themed celebration in partnership with the State Government when the Pride Centre opens.”

The council is encouraging people to share the important message of diversity and acceptance by taking selfies on the road and uploading them on their social channels using the hashtag #stkildaisforlove.

The Victorian Pride Centre is intended to be an international tourist destination, as well as a being home to ten LGBTI services and community groups such as the Victorian Aids Council, the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives and radio station Joy FM. It will “celebrate Victoria’s diverse LGBTQI community, paving new directions for its future and honouring its brave, and at times, difficult past.”
