The Kiss That Embarrassed Australia

The Herald Sun's Mark Robinson labelled it "the kiss that travelled around Australia." It was the moment that Adelaide Crows Co-Captain Erin Phillips kissed her wife, retired American professional basketballer Tracy Gahan, before accepting the inaugural AFL Women's League's best and fairest award. During her acceptance speech last Tuesday night, Phillips thanked her wife for making this success possible.

"Tracy, when we were four months pregnant and I said 'can we go to Adelaide so I can play footy and risk my WNBA (career)', I was waiting for a 'are you joking?' But you said 'absolutely, I know it's your passion and your dream'. That's why every bit of this is all owed to you, and I can't thank you enough, and I love you." Phillips said. "In Erin Phillips we have a perfect example of why marriage equality in Australia is an inevitability," ACT Chief Minister, out gay man and marriage equality campaigner, Andrew Barr told Fairfax Media on Thursday. "Erin is an inspiration to all Australians - the best women's footy player in the country, a world-class basketballer, an Olympian and a mother, who just happens to be in with love a woman, Tracy Gahan.”

Phillips contribution to sport is extraordinary. In this inaugural AFL Women’s season, she led the Adelaide Crows to the premiership, was crowned Crows best and fairest, the AFLW's best and fairest and the AFL Players' Association most valuable player. All while adjusting to life with now 5 month old twins Blake and Brooklyn. Before her AFLW success, Phillips represented Australia twice at the Olympics in basketball, winning a silver medal with the Opals at the Beijing Olympics. She has won two American WNBA basketball premierships and this month heads back to the USA for pre-season training with her current WNBA team, the Dallas Wings. "The fact Erin and Tracy are legally married in America, but not here, is shameful.” Says Barr. “Erin is like so many other Australians denied marriage equality – she can contribute to the heart of this nation, but this nation won't let her legally commit her heart to the one she loves.”

"Those politicians who have put the slows on the inevitable — marriage equality — are the real bigots. These supposedly intelligent men and women are playing politics with the subject and it’s self-centred rubbish," wrote Robinson.

"It’s an embarrassment that we don’t have same-sex marriage and adds to the popular belief around the world that Australia is a backwater of convicts and hoodlums." Have you faxed your MP to tell them it's time to vote for equality?

Tell Malcolm Turnbull to grow a spine and allow a free vote on marriage equality.
