OITNB's Samira Wiley And Lauren Morelli Are Married!

Congratulations to OITNB actress Samira Wiley and writer Lauren Morelli, who married in Palm Springs on Saturday afternoon.

According to Martha Stewart Weddings, the brides wore white, Samira’s Baptist pastor parents officiated the outdoor ceremony and the girls walked up the aisle to Montell Jordan's "This Is How We Do It.”

But this happy ending did not come easily for Morelli and she detailed her struggles with coming out in a deeply moving 2014 blog for mic.com.

Morelli had been married to her husband for 5 months when she began working as a writer on OITNB, but “I realized I was gay in fall 2012, one of my first days on the set.” While working on the show, Morelli “Continued to spiral downward. I felt like my life was being rewritten without my permission. I'd checked all my boxes! I was happily married and loved my job!”

Morelli struggled with shame, guilt and suicidal thoughts as she confronted her sexuality and mourned the end of her marriage. “If being gay meant losing the person I loved most in the world, if it meant coming out to my parents and tearing open the most vulnerable, soft parts of myself and showing them to everyone I knew, I would rather be dead.”

Lauren and Samira have made a deliberate choice to share their journey publicly. As Samira told USA Today in an interview published last week, "Lauren and I both really believe in LGBT visibility and I think that we have done that in a really unapologetic way. The way that we live our lives, the way that we post pictures of each other ... Sometimes I don’t feel like we’re doing something that’s so radical. We’re just living our lives. But in these times, it is radical, because people have not felt comfortable just living their lives."

"I get messages online from people from different continents, people from Africa, people from all over Europe and Asia, people who can’t talk about this to anyone," she said. "They send secret messages to me online about what we mean to them, and about us giving them hope. And honestly, that’s really because we’re just showing who we are and just showing people that that is OK."
